Carolyn Bilo is the AmeriCorps Flex Program Coordinator at Playworks, and a 2015 IU alum who studied Youth Development. Carolyn recently took some time to share her career experiences and insights with The Walter Center.
Q: How would you describe your typical daily tasks and how they support your organization?
C: As the “Flex” position at Playworks, I go around to our five Playworks schools in Indianapolis that have a coach there everyday. I am on a five week rotation and spend a week at each school during that rotation. I come to the school with the best practices I see at all the schools and help give the coach support while I am there. I run the programs while I am there so the coach can step back and observe things they wouldn’t normally notice while facilitating the program him/herself.
Q: What is your favorite part of your job?
C: My favorite part of my job is getting to know all the coaches so well and getting to interact with so many different types and groups of kids.
Q: Reflecting on your time at IU, what memories come to mind?
C: I miss IU so much and one of my favorite things to do in Bloomington was take advantage of the nature and volunteer in the community. I found that once I really connected with my teachers and spent more time studying on campus, I started to love the atmosphere even more. My favorite place on campus to study was the 3rd floor of Wells.
Q: Did you have a favorite class or professor during your time at IU?
C: I really enjoyed Sociology of Childhood because the professor was amazing and made the material very interesting.
