Episode 07: Work Authorization + Tips for International Students

Episode 07: Quick Tips for International Students
Hey Hoosiers, in these last three micro-episodes on getting ready for career fairs, we’re focusing on student groups that come to us with some unique questions and concerns. In this episode, we talk about just a few tips for how international students can find success at the career fair.

Remember, we can’t cover everything about the extra challenges of finding a job in a foreign country in just five minutes. We encourage you to follow up with us after you listen by scheduling a coaching appointment or coming to drop-in hours for more personalized help.

Understanding Work Authorization
It is really important to understand work authorization before you begin applying for jobs and internships. Talk to the folks at the Office of International Services for help about this. They are the pros, and they are here to help you!

Asking About Work Sponsorship
Unfortunately, the recruiters who work at the career fair rarely know much for certain about whether or not their companies offer work sponsorship for international students. Sometimes, they don’t even know what that means. That can be really frustrating for international students.

We recommend that you practice having this conversation with a career coach before going to the fair and doing it in-person.

Parallel Planning
Have a goal in mind that you’re pursuing, but even as you’re pursuing that goal, have a backup plan (or two) in mind, in case your first goal doesn’t pan out. This is good advice for everyone, but particularly for international students seeking work authorization in the U.S. If you can’t get work authorization or a visa here, what’s the next step?
