test tubes in a row filled with multi-colored liquidsCovance Inc.’s unique perspectives on healthcare are built from decades of scientific expertise and precision delivery of the largest volume of drug development data in the world. They’re dedicated to advancing healthcare and junior biotechnology major Andrea Nowakowski is dedicated to the same cause.

Her main project was to sort through test materials at the Greenfield, Indiana location and contact clients about methods of disposal. She also helped out in the laboratory with the formulation of doses for use in studies.

She shadowed departments at Covance such as immunology and immunotoxicology.

“An internship is a great way to get your toes wet and explore different areas of the industry,” Andrea said. “It’s an opportunity to grow professionally as well. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or even shadow other departments.”

This was Andrea’s second internship experience of her college career. Her first internship was at OrthoWorx during the summer of 2018.

At Covance, she learned how the pharmaceutical industry can go from just an idea to a product being sold on the market. Specifically, she learned about the early development of pharmaceuticals and animal testing within the industry, including regulations and operating procedures that ensure safe, quality products.

“The most rewarding part was being able to form connections with my co-workers and form a network that could potentially help me in the industry post-graduation,” she said.

This experience helped her align her career goals and find her areas of interest within the biotechnology industry. She said Covance offered modules called ‘Campus to Corporate’ that helped her engage with presenting, networking and similar topics.

Note: Covance is a gold sponsor for the Career + Internship Fair. Andrea Nowakowski received one of several available internship scholarships from the Walter Center for Career Achievement, which are awarded semesterly.
