Now Hiring: Chalkbeat seeks reporters in Chicago, Detroit and other cities

Chalkbeat is a non-profit news organization committed to covering the effort to improve schools for children, especially those who have historically lacked access to education.

According to the organization, they are mission-driven. They believe every child deserves an excellent education and a strong press is vital to making that happen. Yet they are also fiercely independent and do not take a position on the best path for achieving equity.

This organization believes education is fundamentally a local issue, so its coverage is rooted in local communities. Currently, they report from Chicago, Detroit, Newark, New York, Indiana, and Tennessee.

Chalkbeat is preparing to begin a five-year expansion plan to almost triple the number of local bureaus. This year, with a budget of $12 million, it’s the third-largest non-profit news organization in the country.

With this growth comes new employment opportunities. Chalkbeat is hiring mission-driven journalists, business staff and technologists who believe in the power of the local press. They currently have openings for Chicago and Detroit reporters, Graphic Designer/Project Manager and Chief People Officer.
