The Good Place, This is Us, The Voice and Bring the Funny are the main shows senior Ann Vrooman, who double majors in public relations and Spanish, was able to work on as a Press and Publicity intern for NBC Entertainment.
“I’ve always wanted to work in the entertainment segment of public relations, and I’ve learned that just diving in is the best way to learn,” she said. “I’ve also learned how much the industry is evolving, and I’m excited to see where it goes.”
Ann assisted in administrative tasks, provided support to publicists who work on scripted and alternative programming, compiled media coverage, assisted at events and press junkets, covered phones, and attended photo and video shoots.
“Some of the most rewarding parts of the experience have been knowing that my work goes to help NBC in big ways,” she said. “It feels good to know that the work I do will eventually help top executives make big decisions about the company as a whole.”
Before you start an internship, Ann recommends doing as much research about the company and industry as possible.
“Know who the top executives are, who your top competitors are, the company history,” she said. “Working in entertainment specifically, there’s a lot that would be impossible to know until you start working in it, but doing your homework definitely helps in those first few weeks.”
This experience helped Ann learn to speak up and share your ideas, as well as how to be confident in what you’re passionate about.
“It gave me so many contacts that I know are in my corner and really gave me the first step I needed in being involved in the world of entertainment,” she said.
Ann previously interned at IU Communications as a content intern.
