In this course we will examine the relationship between the law and gender, with a focus on laws relating to sexuality. Such laws include laws regulating marriage (both historically and in current times), civil rights and protections for LGBT people, and abortion and contraception policy. We will not focus on what the right or wrong position is on these issues. Rather, we will examine the social causes of why these issues are so contentious. In particular, we will examine how gender beliefs can be used as a framework to understand divergent views on these laws. We will read both from scholarly articles and mainstream media.
