About the USCP

Since 1828, we have protected the greatest symbol of democracy – the U.S. Capitol. What started as one lone watchman hired to “take care of the property of the United States” has grown into a world-class federal law enforcement agency with 2,300 employees. We are a bipartisan, bicameral Federal agency with the mission “to protect and secure Congress so it can fulfill its constitutional and legislative responsibilities in a safe, secure, and open environment, as well as ensure the American public has access to their elected officials.” USCP is responsible for safeguarding the U.S. Capitol, Congressional offices, Members of Congress, Congressional employees, and all visitors who come onto Capitol Grounds. Our mission is critical and unique. No other police department in the country provides the range of protection we do in protecting an entire branch of government – let alone in the national spotlight and with so much at stake. The safety and protection of the Legislative Branch of government, and the continuity of our government rests on our shoulders. We are the nation’s leading law enforcement agency in maintaining order while also protecting First Amendment rights. We are proud to be accredited as a law enforcement agency that exceeds national standards, and we often host other local, state, federal, and international organizations to share best practices.
