This position will work in the Chemistry laboratory on various projects in environmental chemistry. The intern will take on projects relating to organic or inorganic contaminants in the environment such as pesticides, arsenic, lead, and other metals, cyanide, fluoride, phosphates, chloride, and suspended solids. Intern will be exposed to a wide variety of EPA methods by assisting in sample preparation and extraction. The ISDH Laboratory serves the ISDH Environmental Health section, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the Department of Natural Resources through routine and special monitoring of ground, surface and drinking water throughout the state.
One position will be assigned to the inorganics lab and one position will be assigned to the organics lab. The position provides an overview of all areas of chemistry including sample receiving, sample preparation, sample analysis, data review, and data interpretation. An informatics project for laboratory systems integration also is possible for interns with both chemistry and computer skills.
