The Indiana State Senate Democrat and Republican Caucuses offer legislative, legal, communications, and information technology internships, all of which provide paid, hands-on experience in the state legislature. These spring semester positions align well with obtaining academic credit and offer a variety of scholarship and networking opportunities.
Daily responsibilities for communications interns include working alongside legislators, press secretaries, policy analysts, visual communication specialists, and the Statehouse press; writing and editing columns, op-eds, and press releases; creating electronic communication and social media strategies; taking pictures and videos; and more. Then within the communications department, there are also specialized positions such as the policy internship and the visual communications internship. Through these tasks, each intern obtains a rich understanding of both the procedure and substance of the legislative process and how policy is made, while gaining practical experience.
The internship runs from the end of December 2020 through the end of April 2021, and requires all interns to work 35+ hours a week at the Statehouse in downtown Indianapolis. The health and safety of our interns, staff, and the public is of paramount importance. Although on-site work is considered the default manner of work, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there may be a combination of both on-site and remote work, depending on health metrics and trends, and after reviewing information from health authorities. Details will be established closer to the start of the internship and shared with all interns.
Applicants must demonstrate strong writing and interpersonal skills, project a positive attitude, and be willing to work in fast-paced environment. Undergraduate sophomores, juniors, and seniors; recent college graduates; and graduate and law school students are all eligible and encouraged to apply.
