The Indiana State Senate Democrat and Republican Caucuses offer legislative, legal, communications, and information technology internships, all of which provide paid, hands-on experience in the state legislature. These spring semester positions align well with obtaining academic credit and offer a variety of scholarship and networking opportunities.
Daily responsibilities for legislative interns who are paired with one to two Senators include staffing Senate Committee meetings; tracking their Senators’ legislation; fielding and responding to constituent questions and correspondence; researching various issues; and more. Through these tasks, each intern obtains a rich understanding of both the procedure and substance of the legislative process and how policy is made, while gaining practical experience. Each intern is also exposed to a wide array of industries and topics, from education policy, to public health, environmental affairs, current agricultural issues, tax and fiscal policy, and more.
The internship runs from the end of December 2020 through the end of April 2021, and requires all interns to work 35+ hours a week at the Statehouse in downtown Indianapolis. The health and safety of our interns, staff, and the public is of paramount importance. Although on-site work is considered the default manner of work, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there may be a combination of both on-site and remote work, depending on health metrics and trends, and after reviewing information from health authorities. Details will be established closer to the start of the internship and shared with all interns.
