I know it’s only the second week of school, but the IDS basketball applications have officially arrived for the 2019-20 season!
The deadline for the application is next Friday, September 13, at 11:59 p.m.
The application is below so feel free to attach it as a google document, word attachment or anyway you feel necessary. We aren’t looking for an essay with the answers but just make sure explain yourself to the best of your ability with why you believe you’d be a good fit for the beat.
We are looking to fill the following positions:
Men’s Basketball – One beat reporter and one columnist
Women’s basketball – Two beat reporters and one columnist
Email me or firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions! We are hoping to fill positions by next weekend.
2019-20 IDS Basketball Application Form
Number of semesters spent working at the IDS:
Previous beats or other positions at the IDS:
Any outside sports writing or internship experience of note:
Which sport are you applying for?
Which position are you applying for?
Do you have any past experience covering men's or women's basketball (and if so explain)?
Do you have any podcast or multimedia experience (and if so explain)?
In your own words, why should you cover IU men's or women's basketball (being a longtime fan or in love with the team is not a good answer. What qualifies you for this job?)
For both the men's and women's writers & columnist, lots of attention will be focused on your coverage of the teams. How do you deal with both positive and negative feedback from readers in print and, more importantly, online?
There may be times when the men's or women's basketball SID gets upset with a story you've written or a story you're working on because it doesn't portray the team in a way he or she likes. If he or she confronted you about such a story, how would you respond?
For all games this season, not just night games, deadlines will be tight to turn in game recaps, sidebars and columns. How well do you work when given a tight, set deadline?
What are three stories you’d like to write about while on the beat?
Please also attach 3 examples of your past work (either IDS or from an outside media) that you think reflects your best writing ability (preferably a recap story, a feature story and another story of your choosing) and a resume below.
