buildOn is an international nonprofit that is working to end poverty, illiteracy and low expectations through service and education. They do this by funding the building of primary schools in seven different developing countries. They also work with high risk youth in the US to get them involved with service in their own communities.
The chapter at IU would be responsible for fundraising up to $30,000 for the building materials (rebar, cement, ect.) for a primary school in a developing country. In addition to the funds for the school, there will be an opportunity to raise money for travel costs to help break ground on the school. This cultural exchange, called trek, consists of working on the school construction sight, living with host families, and being immersed in the local culture. buildOn is a partnership, and on trek students work alongside volunteers from the community everyday to help build the school.
During the school year the club’s focus will be on fundraising for the building materials, one of the most essential parts of the school process. Along with this, the club will volunteer in the Bloomington community.
