The IU Center of Excellence for Women & Technology is the nation’s first and only large-scale interdisciplinary, university-based initiative to encourage and promote the participation, empowerment, and achievement of women students, faculty, staff, and alumnae in technology. We reach across all fields, disciplines, and careers to educate and encourage women at IU to pursue skills and careers that will create 21st-century solutions for every sector of the economy. The Center’s Student Alliance is a student organization formed to empower and enable women of all skill levels and disciplines to pursue opportunities in technology through collaborative development and promotion of diverse, technology-related activities.
The Center of Excellence for Women & Technology has thirteen Student Alliance Teams described below:
Women Who Code:
The Women Who Code Student Alliance Team is dedicated to empowering women to confidently use technology in an environment that fosters creativity and teamwork. We are a community of students that work together to learn new coding skills, share ideas, and have fun! Our group hosts numerous workshops from mobile application development to database languages. With the help of our members, we create events that fit the needs of students and current technology trends in business. Bring a friend and join in on the fun at the Women Who Code events this semester!
3D Printing & Design:
3D Printing & Design is a Student Alliance Team to “everyone” at Indiana University, in particular, women with an interest in 3D design and printing. We aim to improve exposure and create opportunities for students and faculty at IU to advance their skills and understanding on the use of technology, both professionally and personally. We host a variety of workshop on campus focusing on varied disciplines, majors, and audience with different backgrounds. We host both entry-level and advanced workshops to fulfill both personal and professional needs on 3D design and printing. Join us at IU Center of Excellence for Women & Technology. Practicing your creativity, messing around with 3D printing, and hanging out with makers, designers, and friends!
The Game Design Student Alliance Team is an inclusive effort to bring women and allies together in the pursuit of game design and the associated skills and technologies. We host a variety of workshops focusing on production software, coding, and this creation of artistic assets for digital games. In addition to teaching valuable skills, the Team typically invites a guest speaker each semester who has industry and/or game design experience who shares their perspectives with students. We sometimes just get together to socialize and play games! People of all genders and ages are encouraged to attend the Game Design events.
Social media is revolutionizing the way we live, communicate, do business, and so much more! Join our community to explore and grow your skills both personally and professionally. We bring in speakers, host workshops, and provide private consultations to talk about your social media and marketing needs. Let us know which topics or skills you’d like to learn more about and improve on and we’ll create an event around it for you and your fellow Hoosiers.
Web Design Student Alliance Team is more than a student group; we are a community connected by a passion for web design and development. Members learn to develop their own web page, share and critique each other’s work to enhance their own learning, and take on IU organizations as consultants, advisors, and designers. We hope to build our skills, inspire others, and impact our community.
Black Women & Technology:
Black Women & Technology is a multi-disciplinary Student Alliance Team within the Center that is dedicated to promoting the academic, career, and social advancement of Black and other minority women at Indiana University. Together, we aim to increase the representation of women of color across a myriad of fields, particularly within the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines. All programming initiatives are designed to foster empowerment, support, community engagement, mentorship, and access to professional networking opportunities while enhancing technical skills.
Graduate Women & Technology:
Graduate Women & Technology is a Student Alliance Team exclusive to graduate women with an interest in technology. Like the Center, we exist to promote assistance and resources to encourage and empower graduate women working in and with technology. We offer opportunities for graduate students to promote their work and advance their skills. The team hosts events ranging from social gatherings for casual conversation (like the Center’s Coffee and Conversations), to workshops and symposiums where graduates and professionals can present their own work. If you are a graduate student interested in technology – at any level – join us!
Allies for Equity:
Allies for Equity is a team of undergraduate men within the Center who promotes and supports efforts toward gender equity at Indiana University. Our group works to learn about the challenges of women in technology, how to use this knowledge and our identity to raise awareness, and how to combat negative influences that perpetuate the men-dominated culture in technology. If you’re interested in learning about how to be an effective ally to women, join us!
Entrepreneurs & Technology:
Entrepreneurs & Technology seeks to encourage and offer IU women the opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship linked to technology. By linking and developing a community network of like-minded students, faculty, alumnae, and experienced professionals, budding entrepreneurs can use the network to grow in knowledge, confidence, and ability to launch and participate in women-owned startups. Exploring and committed students are welcome!
Through engaging workshops, information fairs, and other events geared towards IU students, the Center’s Outreach team aims to spark an interest in technology and share its benefits, as well as build an atmosphere of community that fosters growth, learning, and relationships rooted in the Center’s mission – to inspire, encourage, and educate IU women to develop tech skills regardless of their discipline.
MediaMakers is an interdisciplinary team within the Center committed to empowering women working across the media spectrum. Together, we aim to build confidence and knowledge in the use of technology to promote academic, career, and social advancement of women. MediaMakers supports the needs of students in the Media School and Center affiliates, but also serves the broader IU community of students interested in creative media. The team provides opportunities for instructional tutorials, professional development, networking, and socializing. Each day, MediaMakers works to develop and maintain a rich information-technology environment throughout the university that supports IU’s vision for excellence in research, teaching, outreach, and lifelong learning.
The Ethical AI Team is dedicated to empowering women to confidently implement and ethically engage with artificial intelligence technology in an environment that fosters creativity and teamwork across fields of practice or study. Even further, the Ethical AI team works to create a representative, safe, and equitable space to explore and analyze the ethical elements of AI. This community of students strive together to learn and teach artificial intelligence, educate about the trends, work through obstacles in skill development and learning workshops, offer peer-to-peer places of discussion, and provide networking events to synergize connections of our diverse community of AI.
