Mission Statement:
To foster the creation of operas by the next generation of operatic composers; to promote a genre of opera that is relevant to a modern audience; to strengthen the cultural vitality of our region through new operatic works; to provide student musicians, composers and administrators with increased performance opportunities, professional experience, and creative outlets within the industry.
New Voices Opera exists as a training program to help student composers workshop and perform their new operatic works, as well as help singers, technical teams, and administrators gain real-world professional experience. The world of opera has long been battling the threat of a “greying audience.” While opera companies search for a way to attract a younger audience members, few companies have taken to updating the art form. Traditional opera will forever have its place in the operatic repertoire, but a new genre of opera can help attract a younger audience. A new genre can only evolve through the work of the next generation of operatic composers, but student composers rarely have the opportunities or the resources to workshop operatic works.
