Every job seeker knows that networking plays a huge role in your success, but what networking means exactly can feel like a bit of a mystery—an intimidating mystery at that! Try one of our tips to figure out the best way for you to authentically connect with people who can help you on your job seeking journey.
3 ways you can start networking:
#1 Tap into your existing 'warm' network. An easy way to start networking is to have intentional, career-related conversations with people you already know. Ask about their career, how they got their first job, and what advice they can offer you as you search for that first professional role. Even if you already talk to someone every day, there is a good chance you don't know their career story yet.
#2 Take a targeted approach using LinkedIn.Another approach is to seek career chats with people who already work in places on your target list. LinkedIn can help you find IU alumni and/or people you're connected with who are already inside these organizations. When you reach out, make a personal connection and request 10-20 minutes for a career chat.
#3 Get involved in your local community. If you already know where you are going to be living for the foreseeable future, volunteering or getting involved in a young professionals group is a great way to meet people who can help you navigate and get connected to the local job market.
No matter which strategy works best for you, the followingthree practices will ensure a positive experience for you and your connections:
- Seek advice and resources. Don't ask for a job!People want to help, but they often don't know how they can be useful. Not everyone has a job to offer, but anyone can offer advice and resources based on their personal experiences.
- Ask for additional connections. While you're at it, one of the easiest ways people can help you is to introduce you to people in their networks. As you wrap up networking conversations, consider saying something like, "I've enjoyed this conversation, and I am seeking to talk to more people with a background in x. Is there anyone else in your network you recommend I speak to?"
- Always take time to say thank you and follow up.Don't forget to follow up your initial networking conversation with a personalized thank you (email works just fine). Then, when you have an update, take a moment to reach out and share your win with your contact, reiterating the role they played in your success.
