Interested in making a difference on an international level? Give IU Peace Corps a chance!
Did you know that IU is 13th in the nation for placement of volunteers? That means Hoosiers have put their education and experience to work around the world in the areas of education, health, environment, community and economic development, agriculture, and youth in development.
With nearly 60 participating countries, Peace Corps volunteers learn to navigate life in various languages, understand host-country cultural norms and beliefs, and practice intercultural empathy. These skills are truly unique and can help you in your professional career after returning to the United States. In addition, returned Peace Corps volunteers are more likely to stand out over external candidates when applying for federal jobs and have career service resources available.
Peace Corps volunteers typically serve for about two years, which really allows for the development of relationships with the local community as well as a total immersion into a new culture. While abroad, volunteers can expect free housing, free medical and dental and a monthly allowance that can cover food, clothing and transportation costs.
On campus, Vicki Runion is Indiana University’s campus-based Peace Corps Recruiter. She is responsible for providing advice and insight to those interested in Peace Corps service. “We have many students who choose to apply to the Peace Corps for their gap ‘year.’ One reason being that after service students are able to get scholarships, grants, and fellowships to go to Grad School--and often it's free! This is a lifetime benefit and it's a huge incentive and I would be happy to talk with those who are interested.”
