I am Luke Chanley, a career coach at the Walter Center for Career Achievement! My goal as a coach is to help students discover and pursue opportunities of interest, whether it be an internship, job, or graduate school and guide them through the steps to get there.
About me:
When I’m not working with students, you can usually find me following my favorite sports teams, playing games, running, volunteering with the Kiwanis Club of South Central Indiana, and spending time with family and friends. These activities help me recharge and bring balance to my life so I can bring energy into my coaching sessions!
My Career Path:
I earned a degree in business and a certificate of journalism from IU and a master's degree in industrial & organizational psychology from Indiana Wesleyan University. After undergrad, I changed my path to pursue a career in education. I taught a variety of courses (including a careers course) at a middle school for 16 years and have now been at the Walter Center for just over three years.
"Through my experiences, I realized career paths are not linear in nature. What’s important is gaining new skills along the way, staying curious, and paying attention to how you feel as you experience different responsibilities within the world of work. All these help to forge your path forward in your career."
Industry Focus:
I specialize in coaching students in media, arts, design, business, retail, and technology. Through my education and previous professional experiences, I can guide students in creating their own stories about their skills and experiences to set them up for success in looking for opportunities in these areas.
Career Dilemma I Love Helping Students Solve:
People are often scared of it, but I enjoy helping students with networking skills. Networking is relationship building and an important part of the job and internship search process. I love helping students discover that connecting and chatting with alumni and industry professionals is actually fun! With proper preparation and strategy, networking pays off in the long run!
