Back in May, we discussed how to structure your job search to get the most out of your effort. As a reminder, here is a general recommendation of how you can consider breaking up your search:
20%— Research organizations, people, and positions that will be a good fit for you
50%— Network and conduct career chats with people in organizations of interest
20%— Customize your application materials, apply and interview for vacancies
10%— Visit job boards, focusing on those that will have positions tailored to your interests and experience (Handshake, professional associations, etc.)
Five ways you can go the extra mile in your job search:
Job Board Alerts: Set up alerts on job boards so you hear about new jobs that meet your criteria every 24 hours. Make sure you apply within 1-2 days of finding an opportunity of interest for the highest level of consideration.
Cover Letters: Write a customized cover letter that expresses your interest in the position and organization, as well as showcases how your experience matches the needs of the job description.
Career Chats: Have career chats with alumni and friends who graduated in the last 2-5 years. They will have great perspective on how they landed their first role and what it is like to be a full-time professional.
Follow Up: Go back through your applications. Follow up with anyone you networked with inside each organization. If you have a human resources contact, follow up with that individual on the status of your application.
Say Thank You: Take a moment to thank anyone who has helped you in your job search thus far. Not only is it a kind gesture, it may also prompt some additional leads and ideas.
